Fire Protection Services Board
The 84th General Assembly, ACT 1459 of 2003, created Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board.
- ACT 1459 combined three existing boards together, the Arkansas Fire Advisory Board, the Arkansas
- Fire Training Academy Board and the Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board, a non-active board.
The board consists of 15 voting members, plus three ex-officio members, serving 3 year terms.

The Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board duties include:
History of the boards:
- Setting minimum standards for the certification of fire departments.
- Establish a system of identification for fire fighters of certified fire departments.
- Assist fire departments with training programs and assist with the establishment and upgrade of fire departments.
- Promote the exchange of information among fire departments and state agencies.
- Serve in an advisory capacity to the Director of the Department of Emergency Management with respect to the operation of Fire Services.
- Periodically review and evaluate current and proposed national and international activities of fire services to help maintain acceptable standards for the Arkansas fire departments.
- Advise the Director of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy in matters related to the training and certification of fire services personnel in Arkansas.
- Advise the Chancellor of Southern Arkansas University Tech in matters regarding the appointment and retention of the Director of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy.
The Arkansas Fire Training Academy Board was established in 1983 to advise the Chancellor at Southern Arkansas University about the needs and standards of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy.
The Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board was setup by legislation in 1987. Its primary duty was to set minimum standards for the certification of fire departments and training level standards for the fire fighters.
Arkansas Fire Advisory Board rolled out of the Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board, using the members to make up the new board in 1993. Its function became advisory only, with out the power to set standards for the fire departments and fire fighters. The Arkansas Fire Protection Services Board was still there by law, but was without board members.
The disadvantage of the Arkansas Fire Advisory Board, was that the board could not update training standards to keep in pace with the growth in Arkansas fire departments without legislation. Arkansas has grown from approximately 300 fire departments to 1000 since 1991. This rapid growth affects the Arkansas Fire Training Academy in administration and development of the require courses. The two remaining boards (Arkansas Fire Training Academy- Arkansas Fire Advisory Board) did not have a line of communication with each other, as they worked towards mutual goals for fire services.
The new Arkansas Fire Advisory Board represents all fire services interests in Arkansas. Members from all segments of fire services; rural volunteer, municipal volunteer, chiefs, paid, retired, Arkansas Department of Emergency Management, Fire Training Academy and Arkansas Forestry Commission. With this new membership in place, the board is in a much better position to equip, and train our fire service personnel toward our goal of safer fire department in Arkansas.
